Bandon Trails

Bandon Trails was Coore & Crenshaw's answer to a hard question: how do you follow Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes without repeating them? Opened in 2005, their par-71 routing over 6,788 yards moves inland off the coastal bluffs, threading three distinct landscapes—open dunes, a corridor of shore pines, and a meadow at the turn.

The change of scenery is the whole point. A few holes in, the round ducks into the trees, where an elevated tee drops the drive downhill through a gap in the pines; later the land opens back into rumpled, dune-cut fairways that run gold at either end of the day. It's the most varied walk on the property—and the best palate-cleanser between rounds out on the dunes.

A few holes in, Bandon Trails leaves the dunes behind. The tee sits up in a pocket of moss-draped shore pines, and the shot drops downhill through a narrow gap in the trees toward a fairway that spills out into scrub and sand beyond. One minute it's coastal links, the next it's forest—that swing between worlds is what makes Trails.
