Bill Coore built Châteaux in 1987 with a deliberate nod to Tom Simpson's 1920s British heathland courses—sandy soil, heather-lined bunkers, fast-and-firm turf that plays more like Sunningdale or Swinley Forest than anything else in Bordeaux.

The strategy starts immediately: the first hole alone offers a riskier line right of the bunkers for an easier approach, or a safer route left that leaves a harder second shot. That same decision—reward against safety—repeats across all eighteen holes, at a par 72 that stretches past 6,400 yards from the tips.

Caddie notes
01The course defends at the greens' edges—short-siding yourself is the only real mistake available.
02Firm turf means your pitch shots release; land them a third short of your usual spot.
03Peak fee is €160—remarkable for a Coore original. Play 36.
