William P. Bell and his son William F. Bell designed Torrey Pines South in 1957 on the site of a WWII Army camp, on cliffs above the Pacific in La Jolla—still, remarkably, a municipal course anyone can book.
It's hosted the U.S. Open twice, most famously in 2008 when Tiger Woods beat Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff on one good leg, winning on the par-4 7th for his 14th major and third U.S. Open title. The par-3 3rd, known as "The Beach Hole," plays right along the bluff and is the shot everyone remembers first.
This course books through the resort's own reservations portal.
