Pawleys Island sits 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, and it trades the boardwalk and high-rises for moss-draped oaks and a slower pace—locals call it "arrogantly shabby." Caledonia and True Blue, both Mike Strantz designs across the road from each other, are the two courses we catalog here, and they're routinely ranked among the best public courses in the country.

It's genuinely a golf town first: beyond the two Strantz courses there are around 10 more on the island and another 15 within a half hour, so it pairs well with a buddies trip that wants variety without a long drive between rounds.
