David McLay Kidd built Mammoth Dunes around a massive, V-shaped sand ridge that was already sitting on the property, and then just kept scaling everything up from there—fairways run wide, greens run enormous, and the whole course plays bigger than its yardage.
This is a course that wants you to be bold. The gargantuan greens mean a mis-hit approach still usually leaves a puttable—if long—look, so take the aggressive line off the tee and let the width bail you out.
Hole 14 · The Armchair ArchitectHole 14 became the subject of Golf Digest's "Armchair Architect" feature—readers weighing in on the green's design before it was finalized. It's since become one of the most talked-about greens on the property, and a fair measure of how much scale Kidd was willing to build into a single target.
