Sand Valley sits on 12,000 acres of rugged dune country in Wisconsin's Central Sands—six courses from four different architects (Coore & Crenshaw, David McLay Kidd, Tom Doak, and a resurrected C.B. Macdonald), discovered rather than built, on ground that plays closer to Nebraska's Sand Hills than anything else in the Midwest.
Plan on four or five nights to play the four championship courses plus Sandbox and Commons. The resort runs its own shuttle between courses and lodging, and shoulder season—late April, early May, and October—is quieter and roughly $90 cheaper per round than peak summer.

On-property lodging sells out well in advance—these nearby stays keep the trip alive.
