Erin Hills is close to a one-course town—the course and the town of Erin, Wisconsin share a name, and there's not much else out here besides rolling glacial farmland and the twin-towered Holy Hill basilica visible from a few holes. It's 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee, walking-only, and it hosted the U.S. Open just eleven years after opening.
This is a golf-first trip, not a resort trip—stay in Milwaukee or nearby Hartford (small-town diners, a couple of microbreweries) and drive out for the round. Kettle Moraine State Forest is next door if you want a hike the day before or after.
