The Sandhills region around Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen calls itself the Home of American Golf, and the résumé backs it up—more USGA championships than anywhere else in the country, and nearly 40 courses within 15 miles. Tobacco Road and Tot Hill Farm are the two Mike Strantz designs we catalog here, both built out of old sand quarries and both unapologetically strange in the best way.

This isn't a resort in the Streamsong or Bandon sense—it's a whole region built around golf, so the two Strantz courses pair easily with a Pinehurst-anchored trip rather than standing alone.
